Awareness Seminar on Gender Issues

During the period under review, the Directorate of Students’ Services  at Mwanza Campus organized an awareness seminar on gender issues. The seminar was facilitated by Ms. Dorothy Kyaruzi, Assistant Superintendent of Police and alumnus of CBE Mwanza. The seminar was held on on 21 of May and a total of 158 students attended. The main aim was to discuss critical issues surrounding gender-based violence. Key issues discussed included:

  • Physical abuse – such as physical assault.
  • Psychological abuse – including actions that undermine an individual’s contributions or self-worth.
  • Economic abuse – for example, denying someone the right to own or control property or resources, such as a man refusing to allow his wife to own property.
  • Sexual abuse – engaging in sexual acts with someone without their consent.

Ms. Kyaruzi advised students to avoid engaging in romantic relationships during their academic journey, citing the potential risks, distractions, and negative impacts such relationships may have on their studies.

She emphasized that gender-based violence can result in serious consequences, including disability or even death. Additionally, she noted that inappropriate dressing can increase one’s vulnerability to abuse and urged students to dress modestly and responsibly.
