Awareness Seminar on Suicide Prevention and Crisis Intervention for Peer Educators

During the third quarter, the Directorate of Students’ Services at Dar es Salaam Campus organized an insightful seminar on suicide prevention and crisis intervention for peer educators. The seminar was held on 11^th March 2025 and facilitated by Ms. Sophia Sanga, a mental health expert from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). A total of 210 participants, including peer educators, attended the session.

Key topics covered included:

• The importance of mental well-being and its influence on everyday life.
• Common mental health challenges, including stress, anxiety, and depression.
• The impact of poor mental health on academic performance and personal development.
• stigma surrounding mental health, which often prevents individuals from seeking help.
• Recognizing Warning signs that indicate suicide and providing appropriate interventions
• Practical ways to support someone in distress

The seminar provided students with valuable knowledge on mental health awareness and suicide prevention strategies. Participants were encouraged to advocate for mental well-being and foster a culture of openness and care within the student community.
