ODK is an open-source application that allows a researcher to create a questionnaire form on a
mobile phone or laptop, fill it out on a mobile phone or tablet running an Android operating
system, store and view the collected data on a server such as Google Drive, and retrieve the
collected data on a computer for analysis.
Data capturing includes GPS coordinates for real-time mapping of responses in Google Maps, or
near-real time once the surveyor has an Internet connection to send the collected forms back
to the server.

AIM OF THE COURSE
This course will enable researchers or surveyors to manage the data collection process easier.
This course will equip researchers or surveyors with the knowledge necessary to easily collect
data using mobile phones, minimize time and financial resources, and easy analyses.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Data capturing in the field is usually done using paper, this method has several massive
disadvantages such as:-
✓ human transcribing errors.
✓ higher human labor to review responses that have low confidence (such as unreadable
handwriting, or invalid responses) or data coding.
✓ difficult to use logic branches/skip logic based on participant responses as the paper
survey can't dynamically change.
By using a mobile phone or tablet, data can be collected with all the advantages that electronic
data gathering offers. Data collection using ODK enables a data collector to collect data and store
it on the device. Once the data collector is within range of a WiFi or mobile phone data
connection, he/she can send the data to a server. This course will cover the basics of how to
develop data collection tools using ODK and involves lectures with slides and hands-on computer
and tablet/phone exercises.

COURSE GOAL
The goal of this course is to give the participant the ability to put in place all the pieces required
for a mobile data collection system using ODK.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
✓ To enable the participant to create ODK compliant questionnaire which will include
skipping logic, graphical questions, cascading question types, input value control,
multiple languages, media, and geo-location input.
✓ To enable the participant to use free online servers to store and retrieve collected data.
✓ To enable the participant to learn how to export the stored data to analysis software
such as SPSS or spreadsheet.Page 2 of 2
