HISTORY OF CBE.
The College of Business Education
(CBE) is closely linked to the history of the nation
itself. It was soon after Independence on 9th December
1961, that the newly independent state found itself
in need of trained personnel for the running of the
Commercial and Industrial activities. At that time there
were very few nationals with commercial education. The
need to get trained nationals for the commercial sector
gave birth to the need for a business training institute
in the country.
In 1965 the establishing Act of the College,
Act of Parliament No. 31 of 1965 was enforced.
The said Act gave the College its legal status as an
autonomous institution with its Governing Body. The
duties of the Governing Body were to govern and administer
the College activities under the Ministry responsible
for Trade.
His Excellency, J.K. Nyerere, the first President of
the United Republic of Tanzania officially opened the
new College in January 1965. The College was officially
named the “College of Business Education”
(CBE).

Over the years the College has grown
in size. A second Campus was opened in Dodoma in 1983.
This campus was also officially opened by the President
Mwalimu J.K. Nyerere, in October of the same year.
Whereas the number of programmes has increased from
one in 1965 to five
in 2006, the number of students’ enrolment
has gradually increased from 30 in
the academic year 1965/1966 to 5000
in the academic year 2005/2006. The
Five Year Corporate Plan formulated in the
Year 2000 and rolled over in 2005/2006
guides the development of the College activities and
the quality assurance of the outputs.
In this Prospectus, the stakeholders are being enlightened
of the composition of the Governing Body; Faculty members;
Programmes and Courses offered; Teaching/Learning facilities;
Regulations and Procedures governing students while
at the College.
The stakeholders are being assured that the College
of Business Education will ensure that it attains its
Vision and Mission and maintain being
a centre of Excellence.
